TONIGHT, I'M SPEAKING ABOUT THE STATE OF AIKEN COUNTY'S DISCIPLINARY POLICIES, SPECIFICALLY THE POLICY IN WHICH A CHILD IS REMOVED FROM THE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT WITHOUT ANY MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR APPEAL OR OVERSIGHT. IN THIS DISTRICT, THE DISTRICT HEARING OFFICER CAN MAKE A LIFE ALTERING DECISION ABOUT A STUDENT'S PLACEMENT. THAT DECISION IS FINAL. THERE IS NO IN PERSON APPEAL, NO ABILITY FOR A PARENT OR STUDENT TO SPEAK DIRECTLY TO THIS BOARD. NO REVIEW OVER THE COMPLEXITY OF THE CASE, ONE PERSON'S JUDGMENT, ONE MOMENT, ONE PERSON WHO COULD JUST BE FOLLOWING BLIND POLICY. I ASK THAT THIS BOARD FORMALLY REVIEW ITS CURRENT POLICY, PARTICULARLY THE STRUCTURE THAT ALLOWS A HEARING OFFICER'S DECISION TO STAND. IF THE ORIGINAL DISCIPLINE HEARING LASTED 30 MINUTES, AND YOU ALL LISTENED TO THE ORIGINAL HEARING THAT LASTED 30 MINUTES BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, WHY COULD YOU NOT AFFORD THE CHILD, THE FAMILY, OR AN ADVOCATE THOSE SAME 30 MINUTES PRESENT? WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT HOW YOU VALUE THE VOICES IN THIS PROCESS? YOU HAD THE TIME FOR THE HEARING OFFICER, BUT YOU DIDN'T HAVE TIME FOR THE FAMILY. WE'VE BUILT A DISCIPLINARY MODEL THAT PIGEONHOLES ITSELF INTO RIGID OUTCOMES, OUTCOMES THAT OFTEN EXTEND FAR BEYOND THEIR EXTENDED SCOPE. IN MY SON'S CASE, A 45 DAY DISCIPLINARY ACTION HAS BECOME 125 DAYS AWAY FROM HIS CLASSROOM, HIS PEERS, HIS TEAMS, AND HIS OPPORTUNITIES. BEYOND THAT, HE WILL MISS FOOTBALL TRYOUTS. CLUB SIGNUPS, SEVENTH GRADE HONORS APPEAR OUT OF REACH. HIS BAND SEAT REMAINS EMPTY, AND YEP, HIS SIXTH GRADE YEARBOOK STILL HAS NO SIGNATURES IN IT. IN THE ICING IN THE CAKE ON ALL THIS IS THIS DISTRICT TOLD THE PRINCIPAL OF PAUL KNOX MIDDLE SCHOOL TO CHANGE THE WORDING OF THE REFERRAL, AND THEN TOLD US AS PARENTS THAT BECAUSE OF THE NEW WORDING, THE CONSEQUENCES HAD TO BE ENFORCED. DUE PROCESS WAS LOST THE MOMENT THAT CHANGE WAS MADE. THE HEARING OFFICER HAD NO REAL DISCRETION. HE WAS PIGEONHOLED INTO A SINGLE DECISION, NOT BY CHOICE, BUT BY POLICY. THE DISTRICT BACKED ITSELF INTO A CORNER OF ITS OWN MAKING. ALL THIS NOT BECAUSE THE BOARD IS CALLOUS, BUT BECAUSE YOUR POLICY OFFERS NO FLEXIBILITY, NO PATH FOR CORRECTION, AND NO COMPASSION. HOW IS THIS JUSTICE? HOW IS THIS EDUCATION? DISCIPLINE SHOULD BE FIRM, BUT IT ALSO SHOULD BE FAIR. IT SHOULD NEVER BE IMMUNE FROM OVERSIGHT. THIS BOARD NEEDS TO RECONSIDER ITS ROLE. RIGHT NOW, IT IS FUNCTIONALLY ABSENT FROM THE DISCIPLINARY PROCESS. A CHILD CAN LOSE ACCESS TO THEIR EDUCATION AND NEVER ONCE HAVE THEIR CASE REVIEWED BY ELECTED OFFICIALS CHARGED WITH ACCOUNTABILITY. AGAIN, I RESPECTFULLY, BUT URGENTLY ASK THIS BOARD TO REVIEW AND REVISE SOME OF ITS DISCIPLINARY POLICIES. I'VE GIVEN YOU A FEW GUIDELINES. REVIEW THE SCOPE OF THE DISTRICT HEARING OFFICER OR REPLACE ONE PERSON HEARINGS WITH COMMITTEE OR TRIBUNALS AS WAS DONE IN AIKEN COUNTY IN THE PAST. MAKE THE APPEAL PROCESS TRANSPARENT, ALLOW FOR THE PRESENCE OF A STUDENT, GUARDIAN, OR REPRESENTATIVE, AS WAS DONE IN AIKEN COUNTY IN THE PAST. RE EVALUATE HOW CONSEQUENCES ARE CALCULATED WHEN DISCIPLINE OVERLAPS WITH HOLIDAYS OR SUMMER BREAK SO THAT TIME DOESN'T COMPOUND WITH THE PUNISHMENT, AND PLEASE ELIMINATE THE EXCUSE OF LACK OF TIME WHEN IT COMES TO A CHILD'S ACADEMIC AND EMOTIONAL FUTURE. STOP HIDING THESE DECISIONS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. KEEP THEM CONFIDENTIAL, IF YOU MUST, BUT LET THE FAMILIES BE PRESENT. IF YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR A CASE, HEAR IT WITH THE PEOPLE THAT AFFECTS MOST IN THE ROOM. WE'RE NOT ASKING YOU TO REMOVE DISCIPLINE. MY NAME IS MARITA HARRIS, AND I AM THE PROUD MOTHER OF DYLAN HARRIS, A RISING SENIOR AT THE RICH SPRING MONETA MIDDLE HIGH SCHOOL, [00:25:01] WHO IS CURRENTLY RANKED NUMBER ONE IN HIS CLASS WITH A 5.19 GPA. AS I ATTENDED THE RSL MIDDLE HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY FOR THE CLASS OF 2025, I BECAME EVEN MORE CONVINCED THAT WHAT IS OCCURRING WITH MY SON IS UNFAIR TO HIM. ON MAY 29, HE WAS ABLE TO LEAD THE GRADUATING CLASS IN AS THE HEAD JUNIOR MARSHAL, BECAUSE HE HAS MAINTAINED THE HIGHEST GPA IN THE JUNIOR CLASS. HE ALSO REPRESENTED THE CLASS WELL AS THE CEREMONY MODERATOR. HE WAS ABLE TO TAKE HIS RIGHTFUL PLACE BECAUSE HE HAS WORKED HARD TO EARN GOOD GRADES AND TO BE A MODEL STUDENT. PAGE 5 OF THE IKA POLICY PROHIBITS DYLAN FROM BEING ABLE TO TAKE THAT SAME WALK NEXT YEAR BECAUSE HE WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES WHILE IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, EARNING ENOUGH CREDITS TO BYPASS HIS SOPHOMORE YEAR. THE POLICY RESTRICTS STUDENTS FROM BEING THE VALEDICTORIAN SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DID NOT COMPLETE ALL EIGHT SEMESTERS IN HIGH SCHOOL, ALTHOUGH THEY STILL HAVE TO EARN THE SAME NUMBER OF CREDITS. IMAGINE WORKING SO HARD DOING EVERYTHING THAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO JUST TO BE TOLD THAT YOU ARE NUMBER ONE, BUT NO ONE ELSE WOULD KNOW IT BECAUSE YOU WOULD SELL AT THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT WERE GIVEN TO YOU. IMAGINE WEARING A GOWN OF DISTINCTION THIS YEAR THAT WAS SHARED ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT'S PAGE, SPEAKING IN FRONT OF THE ROOM FOR ANOTHER CLASS, BUT BEING DENIED THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF YOUR OWN CLASS. IMAGINE KNOWING THAT YOU'RE RANKED NUMBER ONE AND YOU SHOULD BE THE VALEDICTORIAN, BUT SOMEONE ELSE WHO DOES NOT HAVE A HIGHER GPA THAN YOU WOULD GET TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED WITH THE TITLE. IMAGINE LEAVING YOUR COHORT, WHERE YOU WERE ALREADY NUMBER ONE, GOING TO ANOTHER COHORT, SITTING IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THOSE WHO ARE OLDER THAN YOU AND STILL BEING ABLE TO TAKE THE SAME CLASSES AND PROVE YOUR GPA FOR FARM GOOD, BUT YET IT'S USED AS A DISADVANTAGE BECAUSE THEY ATTENDED HIGH SCHOOL FOR FOUR YEARS AND YOU WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THE SAME GOAL IN THREE YEARS. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY STANCE THAT DYLAN HARRIS DESERVES TO BE VALEDICTORIAN IF HE IS ABLE TO MAINTAIN HIS RANK DURING THE 2025/26 SCHOOL YEAR. IT HAS ALSO BEEN STATED THAT THE ONLY INDIVIDUAL WHO WILL BE LOSING SOMETHING IS HIM BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN ABLE TO CARRY THE RANK OF NUMBER ONE IN HIS PREVIOUS SCORE COHORT AND IN THE CURRENT CLASS. WHO HAS BEEN SO ACCEPTANT OF HIM. THEY HAVE WELCOMED HIM INTO THEIR JUNIOR CLASS AND VOTED HIM IN AS THE SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT FOR THIS UPCOMING YEAR. IT IS NOT LIKE DYLAN IS SURPRISING THE SENIOR CLASS BY DECIDING THAT HE IS GOING TO GRADUATE EARLY IN HIS LAST YEAR. DYLAN SKIPPED HIS SOPHOMORE YEAR BECAUSE HIS CREDITS EARNED DURING HIS SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE YEAR AT THE SAME SCHOOL, SEATED WITH SOME OF THE SAME STUDENTS IN HIS CURRENT CLASS ALLOWED IT. I'M NOT ASKING FOR YOU ALL TO GIVE HIM SOMETHING THAT HE HAS NOT EARNED. THE ISSUE IS THAT THE IKA POLICY HAS INCONSISTENCIES. A PERSON CAN TRANSFER FROM ANOTHER SCHOOL IN AS A JUNIOR IN THEIR JUNIOR YEAR AND STILL BE CLASSIFIED AS A VALEDICTORIAN. ALTHOUGH THEY MAY HAVE EIGHT SEMESTERS, THEY STILL DIDN'T ENTER SCHOOL WITH THE SAME COHORT. HOW IS THAT FAIR? THEY'RE STILL TAKING AN OPPORTUNITY FROM STUDENTS THAT THEY HAVEN'T SHARED FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE YEARS WITH. WHY IS DEALING SITUATION SO DIFFERENT? HE'S BEEN AT THE SCHOOL AND IN THE SAME CLASSROOMS. THE DISTRICT HAS CHANGED TO A BLOCK SCHEDULE WHERE STUDENTS CAN EARN EIGHT CREDITS PER YEAR. BUT IF THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TAKING ALL OF THE CLASSES, IT MAY BE USED AGAINST THEM LATER. LET'S KEEP IN MIND THAT STUDENTS ONLY NEED 24 CREDITS TO GRADUATE. THE OTHER ARGUMENT IS THAT EARLY GRADUATES DON'T TAKE THE CLASSES THAT THEY WANT TO TAKE. I DISAGREE. THEY CHOOSE CLASSES BASED ON THE D1 SCHOOLS THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND, AND BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE COMPETITIVE WITH OTHER APPLICANTS, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WANTING TO GRADUATE EARLY. THIS BRINGS ME TO MY NEXT POINT. DEALING WILL HAVE 21 COLLEGE CREDIT HOURS WHEN HE GRADUATES. HE IS ALSO REGISTERED TO ONLY TAKE FIVE CLASSES NEXT YEAR WITH FOUR BEING DUAL ENROLLMENT CLASSES VIA AC AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE. THERE AREN'T ANY OTHER CLASSES THAT HE DESIRES TO TAKE OR THAT HE WANTS TO TAKE. SO HE'LL HAVE EARLY DISMISSAL NEXT YEAR. WHY WOULD DYLAN ATTEND SCHOOL FOR ANOTHER ENTIRE YEAR TO TAKE CLASSES THAT ARE NOT NEEDED OR WANTED? THAT MAY POTENTIALLY HARM HIS GPA AND HIS CHANCES OF COMPETING FOR COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS WHEN HE CAN JUST GO AHEAD AND ENTER COLLEGE. FURTHER TO SUPPORT DYLAN'S ISSUE, I ATTENDED THE RSM UNDERCLASSMEN AWARDS DAY ON TUESDAY, MAY 27. IT IS AN ARGUMENT THAT IT WOULD BE UNFAIR TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE ATTENDED ALL FOUR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL. IS IT NOT AN HONOR THAT DYLAN IS STILL ABLE TO COMPETE WITH THE MEMBERS OF HIS CLASS WITH LESS YEARS? IF DYLAN IS NOT AWARDED VALEDICTORIAN AS ATORIAN, IT WILL BE GIVEN TO THE NEXT TWO STUDENTS WHO FOLLOW IN LINE ACCORDING TO RANK. DYLAN RECEIVED CREDIT FOR MAKING THE A ON A ROLL FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF LAST YEAR ARE A CUSTODIAN WHO WAS CAUGHT TAKING INAPPROPRIATE PICTURES OF A WOMAN'S BEHIND IN FRONT OF CHILDREN. ADMINISTRATION SAYS THAT HE MADE A MISTAKE, AND HE WON'T DO IT AGAIN. THEY WELCOME SOMEONE WHO CLEARLY DISPLAYS A LACK OF JUDGMENT BACK INTO THE BUILDING AROUND OUR KIDS. THEN WE HAVE AN EDUCATOR WHO'S BEING INVESTIGATED FOR CHILD ABUSE. THIS PERSON WAS INVITED BACK INTO THE BUILDING FOR A SCHOOL EVENT. HOW WAS THIS ALLOWED? THIRD, WE HAVE A PARAPROFESSIONAL, A MANDATED REPORTER, WHO IS RETALIATED AGAINST FOR REPORTING ABUSE. REDCLIFFE ADMINISTRATION IS COMPLICIT IN THE EMAILS THAT WERE SENT FROM THE PARAPROFESSIONALS ACCOUNT. WHAT CONSEQUENCES HAS ADMINISTRATION FACED? NEXT, WE HAVE MANY REDCLIFFE EDUCATORS AND STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE LEAVING THIS YEAR. THEY HAVE REPORTED A TOXIC WORK ENVIRONMENT AND THAT THEY NO LONGER WANT TO BE AT REDCLIFFE DUE TO THESE ACTIONS OF ADMINISTRATION. WHEN THESE ISSUES ARE BROUGHT UP, [00:40:02] WE ARE TOLD THAT THEY WERE HANDLED AND THAT WE NEED TO QUIT REHASHING OLD STORIES AND CAUSING PANIC AMONGST PARENTS. I WANTED TO COME HERE TODAY TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE STRUGGLES THAT I FACED LAST YEAR WITH REDCLIFFE, PARTICULARLY A TEACHER AT REDCLIFFE, AND WHAT ADMINISTRATION FAILED TO DO. MY OLDER DAUGHTER HAD A TEACHER THIS YEAR THAT WE HAD MANY CONCERNS ABOUT. WAS SHE FOLLOWING THE CURRICULUM AND TEACHING THE GRADE STANDARDS? NO. WAS SHE SPENDING THE MAJORITY OF HER TIME TEACHING MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, READING, OR ANY OF THE OTHER IMPORTANT TOPICS THAT WE EXPECT TO BE TAUGHT AT SCHOOL? NO. SHE WAS TEACHING WHATEVER SHE WANTED, HOWEVER SHE WANTED. NOT ONLY THAT, HER ACTIONS AND HER WORDS CROSSED BOUNDARIES THAT ARE SET IN PLACE FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS. SHE HAD NO REGRETS ABOUT MAKING KIDS AND PARENTS UNCOMFORTABLE BY PUSHING HER BELIEFS ON THEM. THESE BEHAVIORS COULD EASILY LEAD TO A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE DISTRICT. PARENTS, STUDENTS, AND OTHER TEACHERS COMPLAINED. DID ANYTHING CHANGE? ABSOLUTELY NOT. ACTUALLY, THIS EDUCATOR CAME BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM FULL OF STUDENTS AND SAID THAT THE PARENTS COULD COMPLAIN AS MANY TIMES AS THEY WANTED, BUT SHE WAS GOING TO KEEP DOING THINGS, HOW SHE HAD DONE THINGS ALL YEAR. I ASSUMED THAT THIS TEACHER WOULD NOT BE BACK AT REDCLIFFE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, BUT I WAS WRONG. INSTEAD OF TAKING CARE OF THE PROBLEM, ADMINISTRATION HAS DECIDED TO MOVE THIS TEACHER TO A LOWER GRADE LEVEL. I GUARANTEE SHE WILL CONTINUE TO DO THINGS HER WAY, IGNORING THE STANDARDS AND CROSSING BOUNDARIES, BUT NOW WITH A MUCH YOUNGER GROUP OF KIDS. THIS IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF ADMINISTRATION TAKING CARE OF ONE OF THEIR OWN AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR CHILDREN. THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS LET US DOWN OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THIS IS, I THINK, ONE OF EITHER THE FOURTH OR THE FIFTH PHASE THAT I'VE WORKED ON THERE. WE'RE GETTING REALLY CLOSE TO HAVING TOUCHED EVERY BUILDING ON THAT CAMPUS AND ADDED SOME THAT WEREN'T THERE ON TOP OF THAT. IT WAS ALWAYS A FREE-STANDING BUILDING ON THE CAMPUS, AND THERE USED TO BE THE OLD GYMNASIUM WHERE THE OPEN FIELD IS NOW, THAT IS BEING USED FOR THE BAND FIELD. YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE CIRCLE IS NOW IS WHERE THE AUDITORIUM IS. THIS BUILDING HAS BEEN UNDERUSED FOR A GOOD MANY YEARS, AND SO OUR GOALS REALLY PRIMARILY WERE TO UPGRADE IT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, PROVIDE IT WITH SPACES THAT IT DIDN'T ALREADY HAVE, INCREASE THE SEATING CAPACITY, AND REALLY JUST GIVE IT A WHOLE NEW LOOK FROM THE OUTSIDE. I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT THE WAY THE BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED. THERE WAS SOME THINGS THAT WERE EASY ABOUT IT AND SOME THINGS THAT WERE NOT SO EASY ABOUT IT. I WANT YOU ALL TO REALLY TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT IT AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK, BUT WE'VE PROVIDED SUPPORT SPACE IN THE REAR SUPPORT SPACE IN THE FRONT. ACTUALLY, SOME BAND STORAGE SPACE THAT WILL BE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING. REALLY, IT'S A U-SHAPED ADDITION ALL THE WAY AROUND THE EXISTING BUILDING, ONLY WITH THE SOUTH SIDE FACING THE PARKING LOT THAT'S NOT HAVING AN ADDITION BUILT ONTO IT. CURRENTLY, WE ARE AT THE END OF SCHEMATIC DESIGN, MOVING TOWARDS THE COMPLETION OF DESIGN DEVELOPMENT, SO WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH MR. REYNOLDS TO BE ABLE TO PUT TOGETHER A DESIGN DEVELOPMENT-RELATED BUDGET. YOU'LL SEE THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN BUDGET IN A FEW MINUTES, BUT WE'RE ACTUALLY IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING READY TO UPDATE THAT BUDGET TO THE NEXT LEVEL. THIS IS JUST A LIST OF THE SPACES THAT ARE BEING ADDED; YOU CAN SEE THE SPACES OF THE EXISTING BUILDING ON THE LEFT AND THE SPACES IN THE NEW BUILDING ON THE RIGHT. THE FLOOR PLAN THIS IS THE UPPER LEVEL. BECAUSE THE WAY THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED, YOU COME IN AT THE MAIN LEVEL, AND THEN YOU HAVE TO STEP DOWN INTO THE SEATING. WE'VE DIVIDED IT UP INTO THE AN UPPER LEVEL, WHICH WE'RE CALLING THE ACCESS LEVEL. THEN A LOWER LEVEL, WHICH IS MORE OF A STAGE LEVEL, IN A BACKSTAGE LEVEL. YOU CAN SEE HERE THAT WHAT WE FELT LIKE WOULD BE THE MOST COST-EFFECTIVE WAY TO ATTACK THIS WAS TO KEEP THE BASIC SQUARE OF THE ORIGINAL BUILDING, BUT REMOVE THE SUPPORT SPACE ON THE FRONT, THE LOBBY, AND THE CONCESSIONS, AND THOSE THINGS. TO REMOVE THAT, WHICH ALLOWED US TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SEATS. WE WANTED TO GET UP ABOVE 500 SEATS, AND SO WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO ADD MORE ROWS OF SEATS BECAUSE WE WERE ABLE TO REMOVE THAT UPPER LEVEL OF SUPPORT SPACE. THAT GIVES US THE NUMBER OF SEATS WE WANTED TO HAVE. IT ALSO GIVES YOU A WHOLE NEW LOOK AND FEEL ONCE YOU COME IN THE BUILDING, AS WELL AS WHAT THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING WAS GOING TO LOOK LIKE. WHICH YOU CAN SEE HERE WITH THE LOBBY. WE HAVE A NEW CONTROL BOOTH. CONCESSIONS IS UP IN THE UPPER RIGHT. PUBLIC RESTROOMS ACROSS THE CORRIDOR WITH AN ACCESS POINT FOR THE BAND TO BE ABLE TO COME FROM THE SCHOOL, AND IF THEY NEED TO BRING INSTRUMENTS, OR EVEN THE STUDENTS CAN COME IN ACROSS FROM THE SCHOOL, COME INTO THAT MIDDLE ENTRANCE ON THE TOP. THERE'S ALSO A VERY LARGE AND VERY TALL BAND STORAGE ROOM THAT'S BEING ADDED TO THE LEFT THERE. YOU'LL ALSO NOTICE THAT THERE'S A LOT OF GRADE CHANGE BETWEEN THE UPPER LEVEL AND THE LOWEST LEVEL, AND SO THIS CARTER ALLOWS US TO BE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE THE GRADE CHANGE, SO WE HAVE AN ELEVATOR THERE NOT ONLY FOR THE DISABLED, BUT ALSO TO BE ABLE TO GET INSTRUMENTS AND THINGS UP AND DOWN [01:00:04] FROM EITHER FROM THE STAGE BACK UP TO THE SCHOOL LEVEL OR VICE VERSA. WE HAVE AN ELEVATOR, WE HAVE A LARGE SET OF STAIRS THAT HELPS US NEGOTIATE THAT. THEN ONCE YOU GO INTO THE ACTUAL THEATER SETTING ITSELF, YOU JUST GO DOWN THE STEPS UNTIL YOU GET TO THE BOTTOM. WE'VE ACTUALLY CREATED ACCESSIBLE SEATING, NOT AT THE VERY LOWEST LEVEL, BUT IN LINE WITH WHERE THE EXISTING DOORS ARE AT THE BOTTOM, SO THAT WE CAN COME IN AND HAVE OUR ACCESSIBLE SEATING AT THAT LEVEL. WHICH WILL GIVE US SOME ACCESSIBLE SEATING THERE. WE DON'T REALLY HAVE A GOOD WAY TO DO IT AT THE TOP, BUT WE'RE GOING TO TRY TO INCORPORATE SOME SEATS AT THE UPPER LEVEL, TOO, JUST IN CASE WE HAVE SOME AT THE TOP AND SOME AT THE BOTTOM. YOU'LL SEE TOO THAT WE'RE ADDING, WE HAVE OUR ABILITY TO EXIT ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BUILDING. THERE'S AN EXISTING AREA WAY ON THE BOTTOM THAT WE'RE GOING TO REUSE, AND WE'VE ALSO EXPANDED THE STAGE. THAT'S ONE OF THE OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROJECT WAS TO MAKE THE STAGE A GOOD BIT LARGER. YOU'LL SEE THAT WE'VE ELIMINATED THE WALLS AND THE STEPS THAT ARE CURRENTLY AT THE STAGE LEVEL AND JUST MADE IT A WIDER THAN WHAT IT IS NOW, AND WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO ADD ADDITIONAL STEPS AND ACCESS TO THE BACK IN A DIFFERENT WAY. IF YOU GO TO THE NEXT, THIS IS THE LOWER LEVEL, AND SO THERE YOU'LL SEE THE EXPANDED STAGE AND THE SUPPORT SPACE IN THE BACK, DRESSING ROOM, SCENE SHOP, COSTUME STORAGE, AND THAT TYPE OF THING, AND YOU'LL ALSO SEE THE MECHANICALS UP IN THE TOP LEFT WHERE WE HAVE A RISER ROOM AND ELECT MAIN ELECTRICAL ROOM FOR THE BUILDING. THIS ALSO ALLOWS US TO HAVE A LOADING AREA OFF THE BACK OF THE SCENE AREA SO THAT IF YOU WANTED TO BRING THINGS IN DIRECTLY TO THE BACK, YOU CAN DO THAT BY BRINGING THEM UP TO THAT LOADING DOCK, AND THERE'S A RAMP AND MORE STEPS TO GET IT UP FROM ROAD LEVEL UP TO WHERE THE BULLING LEVEL IS GOING TO BE. THIS IS THE NEW LOOK FOR THE BUILDING. WE FEEL LIKE IT TIES THIS BUILDING BACK TO THE DESIGN THAT WAS WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THE SIMILAR ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE SINCE WE DID THE VERY FIRST EDITION OF THE SCIENCE LABS AND THE BUSINESS LABS. WE CARRIED THAT SAME YELLOW PANEL AROUND TO THE FRONT OF THIS, BUT CREATED A WHOLE NEW ENTRANCE. WE ALSO PLAN TO REMOVE THE BRICK OFF OF THAT FACADE SO THAT WE USE THE BRICK THAT'S ON THE EXISTING BUILDING RATHER THAN ITS A LITTLE BIT MORE OF A BROWNISH SAGE THAT'S ON IT NOW. IT'LL MATCH THE EXISTING BUILDING WITH EXISTING BRICK. THEN THIS IS THE SIDE FROM THE BAND FIELD. YOU'LL SEE WE'VE STILL, AGAIN, TOOK THE ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE FROM THE OTHER PHASES THAT WE'VE DONE WITH SOME BLACK BRICK AND THE TAN BRICK, AND JUST TRIED TO BRING IT ALL THE WAY AROUND THE BUILDING SO THAT IT ALL FEELS LIKE IT BELONGS TOGETHER. THEN THE BUDGET AT THIS LEVEL. THE TOTAL COST IS 10,000,005. THAT'S WHERE WE FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH WITH THE AMOUNT OF WORK THAT'S BEING DONE, THE ADDITIONS, THE LEVEL OF RENOVATION, AS WELL AS CARRYING MONEY IN THAT FOR THEATER AND LIGHTING EQUIPMENT, AND THE THINGS THAT GO ALONG WITH THEATER SPACE THAT MAKES IT A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPENSIVE SPACE THAN JUST CLASSROOM SPACE. IN ADDITION TO THE BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL FIELDS, WE ALSO HAVE A NEW FOOTBALL STADIUM THAT'S GOING TO BE PLACED ON THE CAMPUS, ALONG WITH THE SUPPORT BUILDINGS FOR THAT, THE TOILET AND CONCESSIONS BUILDINGS THAT WOULD GO ALONG WITH THE FOOTBALL STADIUM FOR BOTH VISITORS AND HOME FANS. WE'RE ABLE TO GET IT PLACED SO THAT YOU COULD USE THEM FOR BOTH. I THINK THAT WAS GOOD, AND I THINK THAT'LL HELP WITH THE BUDGET FOR THE WHOLE PROJECT. BUT IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE'RE ALSO GOING TO BE ABLE TO CONSTRUCT THE CRESCENT CITY PARK ON THIS PROPERTY. BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL FIELDS, AGAIN, WE'RE UPDATING THE EXISTING TRACK TO AN EIGHT-LANE TRACK. THERE IS A TRACK THERE NOW, BUT IT'S IN DISREPAIR, AND IT'S NOT THE RIGHT NUMBER OF LANES, AND SO THAT'S GETTING UPDATED TO BE AN EIGHT-LANE TRACK WITH A STORAGE BUILDING FOR THE TRACK. WE'RE ALSO INCLUDING AN AG FIELD WITH ALSO BAND PRACTICE FIELD AND TOWER, ALONG WITH ROTC STORAGE. THE SCOPE FOR THIS HAS REALLY GOTTEN A LOT LARGER THAN IT WAS, AND I THINK IT REALLY WORKED OUT IN THE LONG RUN TO BE THE RIGHT DECISION TO DELAY IT SO THAT YOU'RE ABLE TO DO ALL THIS AT ONE TIME RATHER THAN DOING A LITTLE BIT OF IT, AND THEN COMING BACK AND HAVING TO DO MORE TO IT LATER. I THINK THAT REALLY WORKED OUT PRETTY WELL. THIS AREA IN GREEN IS PRETTY MUCH SHOWING YOU THAT WE ARE USING UP EVERY AVAILABLE INCH OF SITE THAT'S LEFT OVER THERE, EXCEPT FOR THE ONE LITTLE BOX WHERE THE WATER TOWER IS. EVERYTHING ELSE IS BEING USED TO ACCOMMODATE THESE FIELDS. I FEEL LIKE THIS REALLY WORKED OUT WELL TO BE ABLE TO FIT ALL OF THIS PROGRAM INTO THIS AMOUNT OF SPACE. BUT I THINK IN TERMS OF HOW IT FITS IN THERE, IT FITS VERY WELL, AND IT WILL WORK EXTREMELY WELL IN TERMS OF BEING ABLE TO FUNCTION THE WAY THAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO. IF YOU LOOK AT THE NEXT SLIDE, THE NEXT SLIDE SHOWS THE WAY THAT IT LAYS OUT WITH THE FOOTBALL STADIUM BEING ORIENTED CORRECTLY, ADJACENT TO BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL, YOU'LL SEE THE STANDS ON EITHER SIDE. THIS PROJECT, WE SPENT SEVERAL WORK SESSIONS WITH THE FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION, ALONG WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE DISTRICT TO REALLY REINVENT WHAT THIS BUILDING WAS GOING TO BE TO SOLVE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES, PARTICULARLY ALONG THE ROAD WITH DRIVE ACCESS AND CARS STACKING INTO THE ROAD, WHICH IS A CONTINUAL PROBLEM, AS WELL AS CREATING SOME NEW IDENTITY AND A NEW FRONT DOOR, MAKING SURE THAT WE'VE GOT SOME FLEXIBILITY IN THE CLASSROOM LAYOUT, SOME EXPANSION SPACE INTO THE FUTURE, AND ALSO THINKING ABOUT THE WAY STUDENTS LEARN TODAY WITH FLEXIBILITY IN THOSE CLASSROOMS. WE'LL JUST SHARE WITH YOU SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING WITH THIS PARTICULAR SITE. THIS IS, AS I MENTIONED, A CHALLENGE ALONG OLD DICHFIELD ROAD. THERE IS VERY LITTLE DRIVE STACKING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT WE'VE HAD TO REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO IN THE DESIGN OF IT. WE ALSO WANT TO MAINTAIN A CAMPUS THAT IS FULLY USABLE DURING CONSTRUCTION AND THE REPURPOSE OF THAT. FROM THIS POINT OVER, SO THESE TWO WINGS WILL BE DEMOLISHED AS PART OF THE PROJECT. WE'RE GOING TO KEEP THE 2009 ADDITION AND THEN CONSTRUCT THE NEW BUILDING ON THE LOWER PORTION OF THE SITE HERE WHILE WE RESOLVE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WITH SITE STACKING AND PARKING, AS WELL AS ATHLETIC FIELDS. WHAT WE HAVE ON THIS LOWER LEVEL IS THE ADMINISTRATIVE. THIS WILL BE THE NEW PRIMARY ENTRANCE, WHICH WILL FACE THE STREET, SO WE HAVE A NEW, OPEN, AND WELCOMING SCHOOL. THIS IS THE GYM, ALONG WITH SUPPORT SPACES HERE. EVERYTHING THAT YOU SEE IN BLUE ARE THE NEW SCIENCE CLASSROOMS. THEN, SPECIAL EDUCATION IS OFF OF THIS WING, AND THERE'LL BE A SEPARATE ENTRANCE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS. THE FLOOR ABOVE THE ADMINISTRATION WING IS WHERE THE NEW MEDIA CENTER WILL BE, AND THEN ALL OF THE CLASSROOM SPACES WILL BE HERE. THERE ARE CONNECTING BRIDGES ON EACH END THAT WILL CONNECT TO THE 2009 EDITION. ON THIS MAIN ACADEMIC LEVEL, THERE'S CONNECTIVITY TO ALL CLASSROOMS, AS WELL AS THE KITCHEN AND DINING FACILITIES. THEN THE EXISTING BUILDING, WE'RE REPURPOSING SOME CLASSROOMS TO REDEFINE THE SPACES IN THIS AREA. THEN THERE'S SOME ARTS THAT WILL BE HERE, AND THEN THIS IS THE CAFETERIA. WE'RE FULLY CONNECTING ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS TO THE EXISTING SCHOOL. THEN LASTLY, THE UPPER LEVEL OF THE EXISTING 2009 EDITION WILL BE SOME REPURPOSED CLASSROOMS FOR A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PURPOSES. THIS JUST SHOWS WHAT THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL VIEW OF THIS FROM ABOVE WOULD BE, SO YOU CAN SEE THE PRIMARY NEW ENTRANCE ALONG WITH STUDENT DROP-OFF. YOU CAN SEE THE LARGE ACADEMIC WING AND THE BRIDGES THAT WILL CONNECT TO THE EXISTING 2009 ADDITION. A VIEW OF ONE OF THE COURTYARDS IN THE SPACE ON THE LOWER LEVEL, THIS HAS SOME TRANSPARENCY TO THE FRONT DOOR. A VIEW OF THE NEW PROPOSED GYMNASIUM THAT WILL ACTUALLY HAVE SOME VIEWS TO THE COMMON CORRIDOR ON THE UPPER LEVEL, SO WE CAN CONNECT VISUALLY SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT ARE HAPPENING IN THESE SPACES. THE NEW MEDIA CENTER, WHICH WE'RE TRYING TO CAPTURE THAT VIEW TOWARD THE RIVER AND TOWARD THE CITY OF AUGUSTA, WHICH IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL, AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE TOPOGRAPHY, WHICH IS REALLY EXCITING.
