    THIS IS YOUR STRATEGIC PLAN FOR 2023, 2027.

    AND I'M GOING TO SPEAK SPECIFICALLY TO ONE OF THE STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES, WHICH IS NUMBER 3.

    NUMBER 3, I WILL READ, ''WE WILL FOSTER AN ENVIRONMENT OF EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND UNITY OF PURPOSE WITH MUTUAL RESPECT.'' AND I WILL GO BACK AND SAY THAT IN THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNICATION OF HOW AND WHY THE DISTRICT OPERATES HERE, THAT IS THE REASON FOR MY STEPPING FORWARD TO ASK A FEW QUESTIONS.

    THIS STRATEGY NUMBER 3 CONTAINS A BULLET NUMBER 3 WHICH IS, ''TRAINING FOR ALL STAFF ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION THAT IS SPECIFIC, CONTINUOUS, AND INTENTIONAL.'' IN PREVIOUS CORRESPONDENCE TO MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AS WELL AS SUPERINTENDENT AND I BELIEVE SUBORDINATE ADMINISTRATORS OF ANY PROGRAM OF TRAINING FOR ALL STAFF HERE IN THE DISTRICT, I RAISED A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE TRAINING AND THEN WHETHER OR NOT WE COULD GET SOME CLARITY ON HOW THE PROGRAM WILL BE ADMINISTERED.

    FIRST OF ALL, I WOULD ASK WHETHER OR NOT EVERY MEMBER OF THE BOARD, EVERY ELECTED TRUSTEE TO INCLUDE THE SUPERINTENDENT, HAVE CLARITY IN THEIR MIND OF WHAT THE DEFINITIONS OF THE WORDS DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION SPECIFICALLY MEAN WITH RELATION TO THE TRAINING YOU INTEND TO CONDUCT.

    I KNOW THIS IS NOT A BACK-AND-FORTH DISCUSSION BUT I WOULD MAKE IT AN IMPOSITION FOR EACH OF YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT DEFINITION IS IN A CONTEXT OF THE TRAINING.

    BECAUSE IF YOU ALL HAVE DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS, THEN WE WON'T HAVE A CONSISTENT PROGRAM.

    AND THE CONSISTENCY OF THE PROGRAM IS ESSENTIAL BECAUSE YOU'RE GOING TO BE USING TIME

    AND RESOURCES OF THE TAXPAYERS OF WHICH I'M ONE IN DISTRICT 9.

    SO WHAT DO WE THINK THE TERM DIVERSITY MEANS? I WILL TELL YOU THAT THERE'S A DEFINITION IN THE DICTIONARY FOR EACH OF THESE WORDS, HOWEVER, WHAT DOES AIKEN COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION ASSUME THAT MEANS OR KNOW IT TO MEAN? OR WILL YOU HAVE THAT GIVEN TO YOU BY AN EXPERT IN DEI, THAT'S THE ACRONYM FOR DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, FROM SOME OTHER EDUCATIONAL BODY, PERHAPS CLEMSON UNIVERSITY OR THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN COLOMBIA, OR AIKEN? BUT I IMPOSE UPON YOU WHAT I BELIEVE IS A STRONG REQUIREMENT FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS.

    DIVERSITY TO ME MEANS DIFFERENCE IN TALENT, IN SKILL, IN ABILITY, IN KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE.

    THE NEXT WORD, OF COURSE, IS EQUITABLE OR EQUITY.

    I'VE HEARD IT REFERRED TO BY MEMBERS OF THIS STAFF PREVIOUSLY WHEN I'VE DISCUSSED THE TERM EQUITY AS BEING SOMETHING OF EQUAL OUTCOMES.

    WELL, WE HAVE ACCESS HERE AND I BELIEVE EVERY STUDENT AND EVERY CHILD OF SCHOOL AGE THAT IS ELIGIBLE TO ATTEND SCHOOLS HERE IN THE DISTRICT HAS EQUAL ACCESS AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR AN EQUALLY SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME.

    THAT IS WHAT EQUITY MEANS IN MY OPINION.

    AND THEN WE HAVE INCLUSION AND INCLUSION IS EVERYONE REGARDLESS.

    IF THERE'S A CATEGORY OF INCLUSION THAT'S NOT BEING MET, THEN I WOULD IMPOSE UPON THE BOARD THE REQUIREMENT TO DECLARE TO US AND MAKE CLEAR WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED, WHAT IS NOT INCLUSIVE SUCH THAT WE NOW NEED TO HAVE TRAINING TO BE INCLUSIVE? THEREFORE, IT BEGS THE QUESTION, ULTIMATELY, WHY ARE WE DOING A DIVERSITY EQUITY AND INCLUSION PROGRAM OF TRAINING FOR ALL STAFF? WHAT IS NON-DIVERSE? WHAT IS INEQUITABLE, AND WHAT IS NON-INCLUSIVE.

    LET ME JUST TELL YOU THAT THE WORD INCLUSIVE OR DERIVATIVES OF THAT OCCUR FIVE TIMES IN YOUR STRATEGIC PLAN.

    THE WORD EQUITY OR EQUITABLE, OCCURS FIVE TIMES.

    THE WORD DIVERSITY OCCURS THREE TIMES.

    SO YOU HAVE 13 OCCURRENCES OF THESE THREE WORDS.

    IF YOU'RE GOING TO USE THOSE WORDS IN A SIMPLE FOUR-PAGE STRATEGIC PLAN I DARESAY, YOU MUST DECLARE AND CLARIFY TO US WHAT YOU MEAN BY THAT.

    NOW, IN MY OPINION, I BELIEVE ALL OF THOSE WORDS NEED TO BE REMOVED AND THEY NEED TO BE SUBSTITUTED. THANK YOU, SIR.

    DIVERSITY WE SHOULD REPLACE THAT WITH THE WORD DISCIPLINE.

    I MYSELF HAVE TAUGHT IN HIGH SCHOOLS, THREE OF THEM, I CAN TELL YOU FIRSTHAND, DISCIPLINE IS A SEVERE PROBLEM.

    NUMBER 2, EQUITY.

    EQUITY NEEDS TO BE REMOVED.

    INSTEAD, YOU SHOULD REPLACE IT WITH THE WORD EQUALITY.

    BECAUSE WE ARE ALL EQUAL IN EVERY CATEGORY IMAGINABLE, SAFE FOR ONE.

    INCLUSION, WE SHOULD REPLACE THAT WITH RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU HAS A RESPONSIBILITY IN YOUR ELECTED POSITION AND IN YOUR SALARIED POSITIONS AND RATHER THAN FOCUS ON THIS NEBULOUS IDEA OF INCLUDING EVERYBODY, PEOPLE NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE.

    THE CHILDREN, THE TEACHERS, EVERY PERSON ON THE STAFF.

    I WOULD SUGGEST TO YOU THAT YOU NOT INVEST ANY FURTHER INTO DIVERSITY EQUITY AND INCLUSION TRAINING FOR ALL STAFF BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE NUMBERS ON WHAT IT'S GOING TO COST.

    WE DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA OF HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE REQUIRED.

    WE DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA OF HOW WE'RE GOING TO CONDUCT THIS TRAINING, AND WE MAY NOT HAVE A COLLECTIVE IDEA OF WHAT THOSE THREE WORDS MEAN.

    I ASK YOU TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THIS DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION PLAN THAT YOU HAVE, AND YOU'RE ONLY ON THE VERY DOORSTEP.

    YOU CAN STOP IT AND YOU CAN TURN AROUND AND YOU CAN REPLACE THOSE WORDS THAT ARE MEANINGLESS.

    BECAUSE I SUGGEST TO YOU THAT THERE'S A RACIAL ASPECT TO DIVERSITY THAT YOU WANT TO PURSUE, AND THERE'S A RACIAL ASPECT TO INCLUSION THAT YOU WANT TO PURSUE.

    BECAUSE AS YOU MAY ALL KNOW, DIVERSITY EQUITY INCLUSION EMPHASIZES AN INEQUITABLE BALANCE, A STRUGGLE, IF YOU WILL, AND THAT DOESN'T EXIST.

    THAT IS FAKE, AND IT IS FUNNY AND IT IS MADE UP.

    WHAT SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT OTHERS ARE ENTITLED TO IS

    THEN RSA MIDLAND HIGH COMBINED, WORKING WITH STATE DEPARTMENT OF ED OFFICIALS AND WITH CHARTER SCHOOLS, WHO IS OUR NEW FOOD SERVICE MANAGEMENT COMPANY.

    WE'RE BRINGING FORWARD TONIGHT A REQUEST TO CONSIDER GO AND UNIVERSAL CP FOR OUR DISTRICT.

    THAT MEANS THAT ALL STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, IF APPROVED BY THE BOARD, WOULD EAT AT NO COST.

    AS WE LOOKED AT THIS, WE LOOKED AT A NUMBER OF SCENARIOS, INCLUDING EACH SCHOOL'S CURRENT ENROLLMENT, THE IDENTIFIED STUDENT PERCENTAGE, MEAL PARTICIPATION.

    OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, WE HAD TO LOOK AT DIFFERENT GROUPINGS, JUST PLAYING AROUND WITH SCENARIOS TO SEE WHAT WOULD PROVIDE THE GREATEST BENEFIT TO OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.

    THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS, JUST MAKING SURE THAT IT WAS FINANCIALLY VIABLE.

    WE'RE COMFORTABLE WITH THAT.

    I DO HAVE A COUPLE OF POETS I JUST WANTED TO MENTION OUT THE AUDIENCE.

    WE HAVE ELLA MASON WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT [INAUDIBLE].

    THEY'RE ALL MOTIVATED STUDENTS, THEY ARE REALLY FOCUSED ON WHAT THEY'RE LEARNING.

    DR. PELLEGRINO IS LIKE, TEACH THEM HOW TO MUTATE BIOMEDICAL STUFF GETS SMARTER THAN WHAT I CAN DO.

    THESE KIDS ARE TAKING REALLY ADVANCED THINGS TO HELP THEM PREPARE FOR COLLEGE AND OTHER CAREERS.

    WHEN WE MET WITH THEM, WHAT WE FOUND WAS THAT THE CURRENT PASSION AND EXCITEMENT AND EVERYTHING, CULTURE AND EVERYTHING GOING ON IN THAT BUILDING WASN'T NECESSARILY PROJECTED OUTWARD WITH THE DATA FACILITY AND WHERE THEY WERE.

    WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS WE WANT TO FLIP THAT NARRATIVE AND DESIGN SOMETHING THAT REALLY PROJECTS WHAT'S GOING ON THERE, THE IMPORTANCE OF IT FOR THE DISTRICT, AND THEN PASSION AND COMMITMENT TO IT WITHIN THE SCHOOL.

    THE AIKEN COUNTY CURRENT TECHNOLOGY SOUND WILL BE BUILT TO EMPOWER, SUPPORT, AND DEVELOP THE STUDENTS OF AIKEN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

    THE CAREER CENTER WILL BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND CAREERS PREPARING STUDENTS TO ENTER THE WORKFORCE OR COLLEGE WITH A STRONG FOUNDATION AND READY TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

    THE NEW CAREER CENTER WILL BE BUILT TO LOOK AND PERFORM THE PROFESSIONAL WORKPLACE PROJECTING ITS MISSION NOT JUST THROUGH ITS STUDENTS AND STAFF, BUT THROUGH THE ARCHITECTURE.

    THE CLEAR AND DELIBERATE COMPOSITION OF SPACE WILL ENCOURAGE CROSS-CURRICULUM COLLABORATION AND COMMUNITY AS CLUSTERS OF LIGHT PROGRAMS ARE POSITIONED AROUND A NETWORK OF OPEN COLLABORATIVE AREAS.

    AS ONE MOVES THROUGH AND AROUND THE BUILDING WILL SHOWCASE THE PROGRAMS AND THE WORK THAT OCCUR WITHIN IT.

    WHILE STUDENTS ARE TRAINED BY INDUSTRY EXPERTS AND AUTHENTIC WORKPLACE INSPIRED ENVIRONMENTS.

    FLOORING AND PAINTING CASE WERE AND ARE IN PROGRESS AND ALL AREAS OF THE BUILDING.

    THE GYM FLOOR IS INSTALLED BUT HAS NOT BEEN FINISHED, AND THE ROOFING IS COMPLETE.

    THE $44 MILLION PROJECT IS WITHIN BUDGET, BUT DUE TO WEATHER AND SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES, THIS PROJECT IS HIGH IN APPROXIMATELY 4-6 WEEKS, ESTIMATING A MID AUGUST COMPLETION.

    ALL 7TH AND 8TH GRADERS WILL ATTEND AIKEN TECHNICAL COLLEGE FOR APPROXIMATELY 3-4 WEEKS.

    WE HAVE RESERVE 18 CLASSROOMS AS WELL AS THE GYMNASIUM.
